Venous Disease: Understanding Edema, Its Causes and What We Can Do
Course Description
This lecture will review the venous vascular anatomy of the leg and help
appreciate the incidence, severity and importance of peripheral edema.
PICA is approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education as a provider of continuing education in podiatric medicine. PICA has approved this activity for a maximum of 1.0 continuing education contact hours.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the program, participants will be able to:
- Understand edema, various etiologies and the physiological processes that produce edema.
- Appreciate the differences in venous disease states that contribute to edema.
- Identify treatment options that may be used by both the podiatric physician and referral vascular surgeons.

Marlene Reid, DPM FACFAS, FASPS, FACFAOM
Dr. Marlene Reid is currently a Board of Trustee for the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association as delegate to the APMA and a board member of the Illinois Podiatric State Licensing Board. Dr. Reid also serves on the Illinois State Podiatric Medical Board. She is a former Trustee to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) Political Action Committee, a past president of both the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association and the American Association for Women Podiatrists. Dr. Reid is also a former Chairman of the APMA's Public Education and Information Committee and the former Director of Medical Education of Chicago's Sacred Heart Hospital's Residency Program. Dr. Reid was named several times in the Podiatry Management's list of America's Most Influential Podiatrists and is a Distinguished Practitioner of the National Association of Practitioners and its National Podiatric Chair.Because of her experience in PR, public education and marketing, Dr. Reid has become a nationally recognized expert on internal marketing for podiatric practices and has lectured over the years on marketing and related practice management topics.
Dr. Reid has been a spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association for many years and is often quoted on women's foot health issues. Dr. Reid has lectured extensively to pedicurists for several years and is considered one of the country's experts on women's foot health.
She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan and her Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine from Chicago's Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine. She practices in Naperville, IL at Family Podiatry Center with her husband.
