Understanding Risks of DVT/PE in Foot and Ankle Surgery

Course Description
A discussion of the risks of DVT in patients undergoing foot and ankle surgery, assessment of patient risks, and when prophylaxis may be warranted.

PICA is approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education as a provider of continuing education in podiatric medicine. PICA has approved this activity for a maximum of 1.0 continuing education contact hours.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the risks of DVT/PE in foot and ankle surgery.
  2. Understand current recommendations regarding prophylaxis of DVT/PE in foot and ankle surgery.
  3. Understand risk assessment tools that can be used to identify patients in higher risk categories.
  4. Understand options for chemical and other forms of prophylaxis.

Faculty

Alan Banks, DPM
Dr. Banks has been in private surgical practice in Georgia for over 20 years. He is a recognized authority on foot and ankle surgery and receives referrals from across the United States for evaluation and treatment of the most complex problems. Dr. Banks has lectured extensively in the United States and Europe and published over two dozen chapters for medical textbooks as well as articles for medical journals. He was chief editor of the third edition of McGlamry's Comprehensive Textbook of Foot and Ankle Surgery, the standard reference text in the podiatric profession. He has served as an editorial advisor to the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association and is currently a member of the manuscript review panel of the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery.
