The Assistant’s Role in Risk Reduction

Course Description
This program will provide case examples in which the actions of a podiatric assistant was involved in the patient’s decision to file a lawsuit against the podiatrist and will discuss office systems that can be implemented to assist the assistant and the podiatrist in providing good patient care. PICA is approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education as a provider of continuing education in podiatric medicine. PICA has approved this activity for a maximum of 1.0 continuing education contact hours.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the importance of clear communication between staff and physicians and between staff and patients.
  2. Have a better understanding of appropriate medical record documentation.
  3. Implement effective office systems to ensure appropriate patient care and make the office run more efficiently.

Barbara Bellione, RN, CPHRM, ARM
Barbara Bellione joined PICA in April 2004 as the Director of Risk Management. She has 20 years of experience in healthcare risk management. She also has experience in managing professional and general liability claims for a multi-hospital corporation and as a registered nurse. Barbara is responsible for management of PICA’s risk management program, coordinating risk management consultative and educational services to PICA policyholders, development of risk management resources, and authoring risk management articles for publication in PICA publications.
