Perioperative Considerations

Course Description
This presentation will review the collection process of patient medical information and highlight salient perioperative issues. Risk factors for complications will be discussed. At times, things will go wrong, and complications occur. The only thing we can use to mitigate this is anticipation through knowledge of our patient.

PICA is approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education as a provider of continuing education in podiatric medicine. PICA has approved this activity for a maximum of 1.0 continuing education contact hours.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize and evaluate risk factors for complications in their surgical patients.
  2. Identify patients who may be problematic or have a likelihood for perioperative complications.
  3. Review risk factors and provide solutions for perioperative management.

John V. Vanore, DPM
Dr. Vanore is a podiatrist in private practice in Gadsden, Alabama. He has been active in continuing education programs and teaching for more than 30 years and is a faculty member of The Podiatry Institute. He earned his podiatric medical degree from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago and then completed a residency in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery at Franklin Boulevard and Central Community Hospitals in Chicago. He spent several years in teaching as an Associate Professor at the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine.

Dr. Vanore is board certified in foot and ankle surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. He is a Fellow in the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and was active for a decade in the development of the Preferred Practice Guidelines and later Clinical Practice Guidelines. Dr. Vanore is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and Alabama.

Dr. Vanore writes and lectures extensively on topics of joint implants and holds several patents for medical devices. He has authored numerous book chapters and journal articles. His articles have been published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery, and Clinics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. He was awarded the Stickel Gold Medal in 1984 for his paper on complications of silicone great toe implants.
